Sasha Kurmaz was born 1986 in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he lives and works today. The multidisciplinary artist works with photography and public intervention, video and performative practices. In most of his work he plays a game of de-powering power structures, using both humoristic and conceptual interventions. Characterized by extreme simplicity of execution, by means of visually minimal gestures, interventions, and situational works, Sasha analyzes socially and political interrelationships that address themes both poetic and political. Kurmaz’s work is at once direct and open to interpretation. He participated in many international group exhibitions and festivals, including exhibitions at the Zamek Ujazdowski Art Centre, ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art Karlsruhe, Vienna Künstlerhaus, Architekturzentrum Wien, 19th Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography, Saatchi Gallery and PinchukArtCentre 2016. His work has been published in a wide range of international magazines, including FOAM, Krytyka Polityczna, YET, Vice, Liberation, Bloomberg Businessweek, Rolling Stones and Süddeutsche Zeitung.

A big wallprint shows a documentation of the ordinary city life in Kiev, part of the series “Chronicle of Current Events”.
On top of it, he divided the scenario into 12 sections holding little dark photographs. Each of these photos was taken in a public space and belongs to one month of the year marked with a date on the picture’s corner. These were taken on the day Ukrainian soldiers died in the east of Ukraine. Every single photo represents one human life.
